Dr Frank Benkwitz is Head of Laboratories, Research and Development at Constellation Brands New Zealand Ltd, where he leads innovation, analytical science, and technical excellence across winemaking, product development, and quality assurance. Originally from Germany, Frank brings a strong scientific foundation to his work, holding a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Auckland and a track record of peer-reviewed publications in his field.
Frank began his career in the New Zealand wine industry in 2008 before moving into the biotechnology sector from 2010 to 2014, where he further developed his expertise in applied science and process innovation. He then returned to the wine industry, bringing valuable cross-disciplinary experience to his work. He joined Constellation Brands New Zealand and has spent over 11 years with the organisation, progressing from Laboratory Manager to his current role as Head of Laboratories, Research and Development.
In this capacity, Frank has played a key role in advancing laboratory capability, integrating research into production, and driving continuous improvement across operations. His expertise spans analytical chemistry, sensory science, and process development, with a particular focus on translating innovations from laboratory scale into commercially successful products. He has contributed to new product development, including in the emerging category of no- and low-alcohol beverages, as well as the optimisation of winemaking and processing technologies.
Frank is widely recognised for his collaborative, applied approach, working across disciplines to deliver practical, science-based solutions that enhance product quality, consistency, and sustainability.
As a committee member of IWAG, Frank contributes his scientific expertise and industry leadership to support knowledge sharing, innovation, and the advancement of best practices within the wine sector.
