Patrick Iland Laboratory of the Year

The Interwinery Analysis group is pleased to announce the initiation of a new annual award to recognise consistent and exceptional performance in wine analysis by participants in the Interwinery Analysis Groups proficiency testing program.

The 'Patrick Iland Laboratory of the Year' award is a reward to recognise the best performing laboratory in the calendar year in the IWAG proficiency testing program. The winning laboratory will receive a certificate and will have their name engraved on a perpetual trophy. They will also be provided with an official 'Patrick Iland Laboratory of the Year' logo which the winner will be entitled to use in their email signatures.

The competition is open to all IWAG members and is judged solely on laboratory performance in a number of the core analysis in comparison to the rest of the participating laboratories.

To be eligible the laboratory must have entered results in all 6 rounds for the following tests;

  • Free SO2
  • Total SO2
  • pH
  • Titratable Acidity (pH 8.2)
  • Alcohol

The winning laboratory will be the laboratory that has the lowest average absolute z-score across all the entered results for the analytes listed above.

The winning laboratory will be announced at the IWAG AGM and their profile will be featured on the IWAG website for the year. Laboratories are welcome to opt out of this competition by sending an email to the IWAG secretariat no later than November the 11th of this year.

The prize is named after Patrick Iland in recognition of his contributions through teaching, public speaking and writing of books on laboratory methods to the continued improvements and pursuits of excellence in the field of wine and grape analysis and his continued support of the Interwinery Analysis Group.
